Australia – ASIC Introduces Director ID Reporting Through Annual Compliance Filings
Australia has introduced new director ID reporting requirements from, requiring companies to provide director identification numbers (director IDs) to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) through routine corporate reporting processes.
Effective 1st of July 2026, the change forms part of the ongoing implementation of Australia’s director identification regime and is intended to improve transparency and strengthen the integrity of company records.
Regulatory Background
Director IDs have been a requirement for Australian company directors for several years, with individuals required to obtain a unique identifier through the Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS). Under the new reporting framework, companies will also be required to report those director IDs to ASIC as part of standard lodgement processes.
From the 1st of July 2027, companies will be required to provide director IDs when:
- Completing annual review filings
- Notifying ASIC of director appointments, resignations, or changes to director details
- Making other relevant corporate lodgements involving directors
ASIC has confirmed that the public companies register will progressively display whether director IDs have been reported, increasing transparency around compliance.
Applicability and Scope
The reporting requirements apply to:
- Australian registered companies
- Registered agents acting on behalf of companies
- Directors appointed to Australian entities that are required to hold a valid director ID
Practical Considerations and Ongoing Obligations
Companies should now:
- Confirm all directors hold an active director ID
- Verify director information held by ASIC against records maintained by the ABRS
- Ensure directors update any personal information that may have changed since obtaining their director ID
- Review internal processes to ensure director IDs can be captured and reported as part of routine corporate filings
Risks of Non-Compliance
Existing director ID penalties continue to apply, including penalties for:
- Failing to obtain a director ID when required
- Failing to apply for a director ID following a direction from the Registrar
As of the 1st of July 2026, one penalty unit is valued at A$364, with certain breaches attracting penalties of up to 60 penalty units (A$21,840).
